Outdoor Events

How the sound of an open-air event in Mallorca is actually planned, told by the crew that rigs it: what changes compared to an indoor room, which system you need, how much power, and how far the noise really travels.

We have been rigging sound in Mallorca since 2014, and the vast majority of what we do happens outdoors: possessió courtyards, olive groves, hotel terraces, winery forecourts, boat decks, village squares. On this island the indoor event is the exception. And yet almost everything written about sound — and much of the client's intuition — is built around rooms.

The most common misconception is treating the open air as "a room without walls". It is not. It is a different problem with different rules, in which the things that help you indoors — the reflections, the envelopment, the natural containment of level — simply disappear, and other things show up that do not exist inside: wind, humidity, dew, the pre-dawn thermal refraction, the total absence of any physical boundary for noise, and a regulation that is applied at the neighbour's house rather than on your plot.

This guide collects what we have learned solving that, in the order it comes up when you plan an event: first why open air behaves differently, then which system you need, where it goes, how it is powered, how it is miked and how far you can legally push it. 01 — The starting point

Why open air sounds different

Indoors, what reaches the audience is the sum of two things: what leaves the box directly and what bounces off walls, ceiling and floor. That second component does a lot of work for free. It fills the back of the room, gives a sense of body and lets a modest rig seem sufficient. Outdoors that gift does not exist: you only have direct sound, and direct sound follows one implacable rule.

Every time you double the distance from the box, the level drops by around 6 dB. If you have a comfortable level ten metres from the stage, at twenty metres you have lost half the sense of volume and at forty metres you are at a different event. Indoors that fall-off is much gentler because reverberation sustains the level at the back. Outdoors, the back gets nothing. That is why the classic mistake — two boxes at one end of the garden and hope — always produces the same outcome: the people at the front leave because it is too loud, and the people at the back cannot hear.

What you lose

The reflections, the envelopment and the containment of level. With no walls there is no free reinforcement, and nothing stops the sound travelling a mile and a half towards the neighbour's house.

What you gain

Intelligibility. With no reverberation, speech is far clearer than in an enclosed stone courtyard, and the risk of feedback with open microphones drops noticeably.

Add three phenomena that never show up inside. The first is air absorption: humidity and distance eat the high frequencies, so at thirty or forty metres the sound arrives dull even when it has level. You compensate with a touch of extra brightness in the distant boxes, not by pushing the master. The second is wind, which does more than put rumble in microphones: because it blows faster at height than at ground level, it bends the wavefront. Downwind the sound carries further than planned; upwind it lifts above the audience's heads and disappears.

The third causes the most trouble and almost nobody accounts for it: the night-time thermal inversion. By day the ground is warm and the air above it cooler, and sound tends to bend upwards. In the small hours the opposite happens — the ground cools faster than the air — and sound refracts downwards, skips off the terrain and travels much further. That is the physical reason why the level that disturbed nobody at ten in the evening can be heard across a whole village at two in the morning.

Mallorca tip

The ground matters more than people think. A sandstone courtyard or a compacted albero forecourt reflects and helps; a garden with long grass or an olive grove on loose soil absorbs an enormous amount, particularly in the midrange where the voice lives. The same configuration that is more than enough on a paved threshing floor falls short in a grove in the Pla. When we do a site visit, the ground surface is noted down alongside the available power.

02 — Sizing it properly

Which PA system for which event

The question we get most often is "how many watts do I need?". It is the wrong question. Watts describe what an amplifier consumes, not what is audible at thirty metres. A badly aimed 5,000 W system covers worse than a well-placed 2,000 W one. What you actually dimension is something else: the level you want at the furthest point of the audience, how much area has to be covered, and how much headroom is left above the intended average.

That margin — headroom — is the parameter that separates a system that sounds good from one that sounds strained. We always work with 6 to 10 dB above the average party level. A system that only just reaches the target level is already compressing and distorting on peaks, and that is perceived as fatigue long before it is perceived as distortion: people do not say "it sounds bad", they say "I have a headache" and step off the dance floor.

Portable or column system

Up to 60–80 people at a cocktail, a ceremony or for background music. Two columns with integrated subwoofer, or two compact boxes on tripods. Under an hour to rig, fits in a corner and runs off a domestic socket. Its limit is real: as soon as a dance floor with low end appears, it falls short and starts to sound harsh.

Point-source stack

From 80 to 250 people. Two twelve or fifteen inch tops stacked over two subwoofers, or on poles with the subs on the ground. This is the workhorse of Mallorcan fincas: it covers a dance floor up to around twenty metres deep, rigs in two and a half hours and accepts fills as an extension.

Line array

Above 250–300 people, or whenever more than thirty metres of depth has to be covered. What it brings is not raw power but vertical control: the level falls off far more gently with distance, and the energy can be aimed at the audience rather than at the sky or the façades. It requires a lifting tower or truss, ballast and considerably more rigging time.

Delay fills

The intelligent alternative to turning the stage up. Two small boxes halfway down the site, delayed by roughly 3 ms per metre of distance from the main system, even out the level at the back without punishing the front. In the long, narrow gardens that are so common on the island they solve the problem better than any power upgrade.

Mallorca tip

At a finca, the factor that decides the system is almost never the guest count: it is the shape of the plot and where the neighbour's house sits. We have rigged 300-person events with a modest stack because the dance floor was compact and sheltered by a wall, and 120-person events that needed four distributed positions because the guests were spread across three terraces at different heights. Before sizing anything you have to see the site — and see it at the hour it will be used.

03 — Where each box goes

Coverage and orientation

Placement is the cheapest decision and the one that changes the result the most. It costs nothing and is usually worth more than doubling the rig. The rule we apply in any outdoor space is simple: distribute across several positions at moderate level rather than concentrating everything in one loud position. Four small boxes around a cocktail area sound infinitely better — and disturb far less outside the site — than two big boxes shouting from one end.

Height is the second parameter. The axis of the box has to sit above the audience's heads: in practice, at least 2.2 to 2.5 metres when people are standing. A box at chest height achieves two bad things at once: the bodies in the front rows absorb most of the mids and highs, and the people at the front receive a level far above those behind. When the audience is seated at tables the criterion changes and it pays to go lower and spread wider.

Aim at the back, not the middle

The box is aimed at the last row of the audience. The front already gets plenty of level from proximity; if you also point straight at them, the whole system has to come up for the back to hear, and the front row becomes unbearable.

Nothing aimed off site

Orientation is the first noise-control tool, well ahead of the limiter. Turning the stage forty-five degrees so the main axis does not face the neighbour's lane can be worth more than pulling three decibels at the desk.

Once the area to cover exceeds about thirty metres of depth, delay comes into play. Sound travels at roughly 343 metres per second, which is about 3 milliseconds per metre. If you place fill boxes twenty metres from the stage, they have to be delayed by around 58 milliseconds so their sound coincides with what arrives from the main system. Without that delay you get a clearly audible echo and intelligibility gets worse rather than better. It is a two-minute adjustment on any modern processor, and it is the difference between a fill that works and a fill that gets in the way.

Finally, think in zones rather than in "the event's sound". An outdoor event normally has three: the welcome and cocktail area, where music is background and people are talking; the dinner area, where the level has to allow conversation without raising your voice at any table; and the dance floor, which is the only one that needs real level. Treating all three with the same system at the same volume is why people end up shouting at so many outdoor dinners.

Mallorca tip

The dry-stone walls of the fincas are far more useful than they look. A wall a metre and a half high will not stop the low end, but it does block a good part of the mid and high frequencies on the far side — and those are what make a neighbour identify "music" rather than "a background rumble". Placing the system so the adjoining plot sits behind a wall, and not in a straight line with the axis of the boxes, is a five-minute decision with a real effect on complaints.

04 — What reaches the neighbour

Subwoofers and the neighbours

Subwoofers deserve their own section because they are, by a distance, the part of the system that generates conflict. The reason is physical: low frequencies have wavelengths of several metres and behave in a practically omnidirectional way. A conventional subwoofer radiates almost as much energy backwards as forwards. Put another way: half the low end you are paying for goes straight towards whatever sits behind the stage, which in Mallorca is usually exactly the house you do not want to disturb.

On top of that, low end is the only thing that survives distance. Three hundred metres away the neighbour cannot hear the vocals or the highs — air and obstacles have eaten them — but the kick drum still comes through with total clarity, as a dull thudding. That thudding causes almost every complaint and almost every formal report. Pulling the master down does not fix it proportionally; the low end has to be treated separately.

Sub stacked under the top

The standard configuration and the fastest to rig: one sub each side with the top on it. Correct coverage, zero directivity control. It is the sensible choice at isolated fincas with no close neighbours.

Centre sub array

All the subs together in the centre, in front of the stage. It greatly improves the evenness of the low end on the dance floor — the spots where the bass cancels out disappear — at the cost of narrowing coverage to the sides. It is the default for compact dance floors.

Cardioid configuration

Two subs facing forward and one turned 180°, with polarity inverted and a tuned delay. The waves add forwards and cancel backwards: in the order of 12 to 15 dB less rear energy. It costs half an hour more of rigging and it is the best tool that exists for events with a dwelling behind the stage.

Ground coupling

A sub resting directly on firm ground gains around 6 dB for free compared with an elevated one. What you must never do is put it on a hollow stage deck: the structure resonates, transmits vibration through the whole stage and the low end turns muddy.

There is one more detail that gets forgotten: time alignment between subs and tops. If the sub is on the ground and the top is two and a half metres up on a pole, their sound does not reach the audience at the same instant, and in the crossover region — typically between 80 and 120 Hz — you get cancellations perceived as weak bass exactly where the punch should be. It is corrected with a few milliseconds of delay in the processor. It costs nothing, and plenty of quick rigs skip it.

Mallorca tip

On plots in the Pla and the Raiguer, where fincas often have a caretaker's house or a neighbouring property two or three hundred metres away, the combination that has always worked for us is cardioid plus orientation: cardioid subs with their back towards the dwelling and the stage turned so the main axis points into the plot. With that we have held a proper party level right up to the cut-off without a single phone call. What does not work is leaving it until half past midnight, when people are already dancing and moving a sub means stopping the music.

05 — What stops a whole event

Electrical power and generators

Electricity is the number one point of failure at outdoor events. Not the gear, not the engineer: the power. And almost always for the same reason — nobody asked in time how much there was, and catering, lighting and sound ended up sharing a board sized for a house.

The two figures to request in writing from the venue are how many amps the available board delivers and whether the supply is single or three phase. A 25 amp single-phase board is about 5.5 kW on paper; with the caterer's ovens and fridges plugged in, what is left for sound and lighting is little and unstable. A three-phase supply at 25 A per phase changes the picture completely, because loads can be split: sound on one phase, lighting on another, catering on the third.

Real draw of a mid-size event

A sound and lighting rig for 150–200 people at a finca sits between 3 and 5 kW in real, sustained consumption. Peaks are far above the average: amplifiers draw much more on bass transients than in steady state, and it is that peak that trips the breakers.

How the set is sized

At 60–70 % of its rated output, never at the limit. A generator running at 95 % injects electrical noise into the audio, cannot absorb a motor starting, and stalls at the worst possible moment. An oversized set is cheaper than a night in the dark.

If there is a generator, its position is an acoustic decision, not a logistical one. A modern silenced set runs at around 65 dBA at seven metres, which is unnoticeable on an open forecourt but ruins a ceremony twenty metres away. The rule we apply: at least thirty or forty metres from the guest area, behind a wall or dense vegetation, and downwind of the prevailing afternoon breeze so neither the noise nor the diesel smell drifts into the site. And always on firm ground: loose gravel transmits vibration and the set sinks over the hours.

Then comes distribution. Sound and lighting must run on separate circuits, because dimmers and moving heads inject noise into the line that later shows up as hum in the system. And the whole rig must have a single earth point: when part of the gear is plugged into the house board and part into the generator, you create an earth loop and with it a 50 Hz hum that no amount of fiddling at the desk will remove. It is one of the most common faults and one of the easiest to avoid if distribution is planned before the first cable is run.

Mallorca tip

Fuel for the whole night plus thirty per cent, and checked by someone on the crew rather than over the phone. Refuelling a set at three in the morning with the party running is possible, but it means stopping. And at fincas out in the interior of the island there is no filling station open nearby at that hour. The same applies to cable reserve: we always carry twenty per cent more mains cable than calculated, because the real route is never the straight line you see on the plan.

06 — Wind, humidity and salt

Outdoors, the enemy of the microphone is not volume: it is moving air. A fifteen kilometre per hour breeze — routine on any Mallorcan terrace in the late afternoon — is enough to turn the celebrant's voice into a low, unintelligible rumble. And unlike almost every other problem in this guide, this one cannot be fixed at the desk: once wind noise is in the capsule, no amount of EQ will save it.

That is why the outdoor criterion is systematically more conservative than indoors. Dense foam windshields on absolutely every microphone, no exceptions, even if the air is still at rig time. On the front line of the coast, where the sea breeze is constant, furry windshields. And a clear preference for dynamic microphones and tight cardioids over condensers: a condenser will capture the nuance of a violin better, but on a windy clifftop it will mostly capture the cliff.

Headset over lavalier

For the celebrant at an outdoor ceremony, the headset wins every time. A lavalier sits thirty centimetres from the mouth, catches direct wind, rubs against clothing and forces so much gain that the whole environment comes with it. A headset keeps a constant distance to the mouth and lets you work with far less gain.

Frequency coordination on site

The UHF band for wireless is saturated in Mallorca in high season: within a two-kilometre radius there may be three other events running. The scan is done at the venue on rig day, not at the warehouse the week before. And the antenna has to see the microphone: a sixty-centimetre sandstone wall is opaque to the link.

Humidity, dew and salt

Pre-dawn dew condenses on capsules and connectors and degrades the signal before it breaks anything. Microphones not needed until later stay in their case until the moment; those left rigged are covered between blocks. On the coast, salt attacks contacts and grilles as well: inspection and cleaning after every event by the sea.

Cable, batteries and routes

Fresh batteries for every event, not recharged ones with "a bit left in them". XLR runs with enough slack that nobody can pull on a connector, rubber cable ramps at every crossing point, and no cable running across the dance floor or through the caterer's service route.

Mallorca tip

The embat — the afternoon thermal breeze — is predictable and worth using to your advantage. It comes in from the sea roughly between one and six in the afternoon and hits five or six o'clock ceremonies head on, which is exactly the most common slot. When we test the ceremony system we do it at that same hour of the day, not in the morning: the result at eleven in the morning tells you nothing about what will happen at six in the evening.

07 — What the musicians hear

Monitors and stage foldback

Monitors are the part of the system that suffers most when it goes outside, and the part that gets budgeted least. The cause is the same as everywhere else in this guide: inside a venue the musician hears themselves through reflection — the sound bounces off the back wall and returns; outdoors nothing returns. A singer who hears themselves perfectly with one wedge in the rehearsal room hears nothing at all on a stage deck at a finca.

The practical consequence is that outdoors you have to give more monitor than the musician thinks they need, and that the monitor mix stops being an accessory and becomes half the engineer's job. When the band cannot hear itself, the tempo drifts, the singer pushes and raises the stage level, and the stage level ends up contaminating the front-of-house mix. The audience perceives that as "the band sounds messy", but the origin is in the foldback.

Floor wedges

The standard and the fastest: one mix per musician or per pair, aimed at their actual position and not at the centre of the deck. Outdoors they need more level than inside, and that level spills towards the audience and off the site: it has to be counted in the noise budget.

In-ear systems

They solve the problem at source: the musician hears what they need without adding a single decibel to the site. It is the best option at events with a strict noise limit. In exchange they isolate the player from the room — some musicians struggle with that — and they need frequency coordination just like wireless microphones.

There is one advantage of the open air worth exploiting: the risk of feedback is noticeably lower. With no walls returning sound to the microphone, you can work with more gain before the system starts to ring. That gives room to provide the monitor level actually required without resorting to aggressive filtering that leaves the voice with no body.

The last point is about coordination rather than audio: distance. In a large outdoor site the control position can be thirty or forty metres from the stage, with audience, tables and catering in between. Shouting is not an option and hand signals are not either. Any rig with a band needs a communication channel between stage and control — intercom or, at minimum, a talkback and an agreed set of signals — because the moment you need it is always the worst possible moment.

Mallorca tip

At events with a sound limiter, monitors are the quietest decibel spend in the budget: nobody counts them and they add up all the same. We have seen rigs where the limiter tripped with the band playing at a moderate front-of-house level, simply because the stage was shouting from behind. When the cut-off is tight, moving the band to in-ears is the measure that recovers the most headroom without touching the mix the audience hears.

08 — Two different problems

Ceremony and party: two systems

One of the most expensive misunderstandings in outdoor quotes is assuming the party rig will do for the ceremony. It almost never will, and not because of size but because they solve opposite problems. A ceremony needs twenty minutes of spoken word to be perfectly understood at low level, with the audience a few metres away. A party needs level, low end and control from one concentrated position. They are two different designs.

On top of that, in Mallorca they are almost always in different parts of the estate: the ceremony in the olive grove, the viewpoint or the spot with the best views — usually also the most wind-exposed — and the party in the sheltered courtyard or forecourt. Gear has to be moved between the two with guests already on site, and that move happens during the cocktail hour. Which is why the cocktail hour is not a break for the crew: it is the hour when the ceremony comes down, the party rig gets finished off and whatever could not be tested earlier gets tested.

Ceremony system

Two small boxes spread to the sides and slightly forward of the celebrant, no subwoofers, at low level. Headset microphone for whoever officiates, a handheld or stand mic for the readings and a stereo input for music. One single objective: intelligibility. Nothing visible should compete with the scene.

Electrical autonomy

In an olive grove or on a viewpoint there is almost never a socket nearby. Either you run a temporary line with proper protection, or you rig a battery-powered system. We always bring battery backup for the ceremony even when there is power: it is the one moment of the event that does not allow a second take.

Party system

Stack or line array depending on guest count, oriented subwoofers, booth or stage monitoring, and dance floor lighting operated from the same position. Here level does matter, and here everything from the previous sections applies.

What is shared

The desk, the trunk cabling, the wireless and the engineer. That is why a single supplier for ceremony, cocktail, dinner and party works out cheaper than booking them separately: infrastructure is shared, and so is responsibility for the timings.

Mallorca tip

The classic scheduling clash is the party soundcheck against the ceremony. If there is a band, the check needs an empty site and a long hour; if the ceremony is at six and guests arrive at half past five, the check has to be done by four — which forces the party rig to be built by mid-afternoon and coordinated with the caterer, who at that hour is occupying the same space. This is a conversation to have with the wedding planner weeks in advance, not on the day.

09 — The real ceiling

Noise regulation in the Balearics

It is worth being clear about the order of things here, because clients almost always have it inverted. What decides how late and how loud your event can run is not the regional law in the abstract: it is, in this order, the venue's activity licence, then the by-law of the relevant town hall and, as a general framework, Balearic regulation. The licence can be — and often is — stricter than the by-law. None of the three is negotiable on the day.

Regional framework

Law 1/2007 of 16 March, on protection against acoustic pollution in the Balearic Islands, is the reference regulation across the archipelago. It sets the general regime of noise protection, the acoustic zones and the division of responsibilities, and empowers town halls to develop their own by-laws.

Municipal by-law

This is where the numbers that actually affect you live: immission limit values, hours and the authorisation regime for open-air activity. It varies from one municipality to another, and on the island there are notable differences between a busy coastal town hall and one inland. Palma, Calvià, Andratx, Pollença and Manacor do not share the same wording.

Day, evening and night periods

Acoustic regulation splits the day into three periods with different limits, and the night period is always the strictest. In most Mallorcan municipalities the night period starts at 23:00 and runs to 07:00. That eleven o'clock step is what shapes the design of the second half of the event.

Where it is measured

The point that counts is not your dance floor: it is the façade or the interior of the affected dwelling. A perfectly reasonable level on the plot can breach the limit in the neighbour's bedroom, and vice versa. That is why orientation and low-end treatment are worth more than any argument about the DJ's volume.

Limiter-recorder

Many licensed event venues have an acoustic limiter-recorder installed that cuts or attenuates the signal above a threshold and keeps a log. If the venue has one, you need to know its threshold and its connection point before designing the system: it conditions the musical format, the stage position and even the choice between wedges and in-ears.

The practical consequence of all this is a single question, and it has to be asked in writing and before signing anything: what exactly does this venue's licence say about amplified music outdoors, at what hours and with what limit? The answer changes the budget and sometimes changes the whole format of the event. A space with a one o'clock cut-off at low level and one with a three o'clock cut-off and no limiter do not allow the same party, however much both advertise themselves as a "wedding finca".

Note

This section is technical orientation based on our production experience, not legal advice. Limit values, hours and authorisation requirements are set by the by-law in force at each town hall and by the specific licence of the space, and they change over time. Before locking an event's running order it is worth verifying them with the venue and, if necessary, with the town hall itself.

10 — Before a single cable goes up

Pre-event technical checklist

This is the list we take to the site visit. It is not exhaustive, but it covers what has caused ninety per cent of our scares in twelve years. If you are organising an outdoor event and hiring another supplier, it works just as well: these are the questions any serious crew should be able to answer before quoting a fixed price.

01 · Power and connection point

Amps available, single or three phase, physical location of the board, condition of the RCD protection, and which other suppliers will hang off it. Photograph of the board included.

02 · Licence, hours and limiter

Cut-off time for amplified music, whether a limiter exists and at what threshold, and whether outdoor and indoor music are treated differently. In writing, from the venue.

03 · Neighbours and orientation

Which dwellings lie within a five-hundred-metre radius, in which direction, and what natural or built obstacles sit between them and the dance floor. This determines where the stage faces.

04 · Access and load-in

Width of the track, whether a van gets in or everything has to be carted, the real distance from the unloading point to the stage, and whether that route has steps, loose gravel or lawn.

05 · Surface and levelling

What the ground is made of where boxes, subs and towers go, whether it is level and whether it takes the weight. Loose gravel and soft lawn call for spreader plates under the feet.

06 · Zones and timing

Where each block happens — welcome, ceremony, dinner, party — at what time, and what gear moves it implies. Cross-checked against the caterer's schedule and the other suppliers.

07 · Weather and plan B

Prevailing wind at event time, an identified covered alternative with its own power, and an agreed deadline for calling plan B. Without an agreed deadline the decision gets made late and badly.

08 · Protecting the gear

A roof over any control position, covers on the boxes until show time, no electronics resting directly on the ground, and an allowance for pre-dawn dew even when the forecast is clear.

09 · Contact and spares

One venue contact reachable throughout the event — with the number written down, not "ask for the manager" — and the critical spares kit: wireless mic, network cable, mains cable, batteries and one free desk channel.

Mallorca tip

The site visit has to happen at the hour of the event, not whenever the diary allows. A finca at eleven in the morning is a calm place with good light and no wind; that same finca at seven in the evening can have a twenty kilometre per hour breeze coming in past the olive grove and the sun straight into the booth position. We have moved the stage at more than one event simply by going back at the right hour.

Outdoor sound is designed on site

Almost everything in this guide comes from the same root: outdoors, you cannot design from a catalogue. The same equipment list that is more than enough in a paved courtyard in Sencelles falls short in an olive grove in Alaró and puts you in conflict with the neighbour at half past eleven on a terrace in Deià. The variable is not the gear — it is the site, the hour and who lives around it.

That is why we always work with a site visit when the event is outdoors, and at the hour it will actually take place. That visit settles what cannot be fixed later: where the stage faces, how much power there really is, where the wind comes from at six in the evening, what can be heard from the neighbouring finca and what the venue licence says. Half an hour there saves the awkward conversation on the day, which is always the same one: "this can't be done here".

It is how we have worked since 2014 across all our sound and lighting rental and full technical production: one single point of contact for sound, light, power and coordination with the other suppliers, and an engineer on site throughout the event.

About sound in the open air

How much sound power do I need for an outdoor event?
Power in watts is the worst possible indicator, because it says nothing about coverage. What you dimension is the level you want at the furthest point of the audience and the headroom you need above it. As a practical reference at a Mallorcan finca: up to 60–80 people at a cocktail, a column system or two compact boxes; from 80 to 250 people with a dance floor, two twelve or fifteen inch tops over two subwoofers; above 250 people, or whenever there is more than 30 metres of depth, a line array or delay fills. And always 6 to 10 dB of headroom over the intended average level: a system running at its limit sounds bad before it sounds loud.
Do I need a generator or is the finca's power enough?
It depends on two figures you should request in writing: how many amps the available board delivers and whether the supply is single or three phase. A 25 A single-phase board is about 5.5 kW on paper, and the caterer's ovens and fridges are already eating into that. For an event of up to roughly 150 people with sound and moderate lighting, a healthy three-phase board at the finca is usually enough. Beyond that, or if there are moving heads, food trucks or electric kitchens, bring a generator. Our rule is to size the set at 60–70 % of its rated output: a generator running at its limit injects electrical noise into the audio and stalls when a motor starts.
How late can music run at a finca in Mallorca?
There is no single cut-off for the whole island. The regional framework is Law 1/2007 on protection against acoustic pollution in the Balearic Islands, but the actual hours and limit values are set by each town hall's own by-law, and above all of that sits the venue's activity licence, which can be stricter than the by-law. In practice the night period starts at 23:00 in most municipalities and many fincas have amplified music limited to somewhere between 01:00 and 03:00. The only reliable answer is to ask the venue in writing what its licence says before you lock the running order.
What happens if it is windy on the day of the event?
Wind does three things: it puts rumble into microphones, it bends the wavefront — downwind the sound carries further, upwind it lifts above the audience — and it turns any elevated structure into a safety issue. What we do is fit dense foam windshields on every outdoor microphone, lower the flying height of the boxes when the afternoon sea breeze picks up, always ballast tripods and towers, and agree in advance the wind speed at which the elevated rig comes down. On the Mallorcan coast the afternoon thermal breeze is predictable: it arrives between 13:00 and 18:00 and hits ceremonies head on.
Can the same system cover both the ceremony and the party?
The same boxes almost never, because they solve opposite problems. A ceremony needs speech intelligibility at low level, spread out and close to the guests, with no subwoofers; a party needs level, low end and control from one concentrated position. They are usually in different parts of the estate as well. What is shared is the desk, the trunk cabling and the engineer. In practice we rig two systems and use the cocktail hour to move whatever can be reused — which is why the cocktail hour is an hour of real work for the crew, not a break.
How do I avoid disturbing the neighbours with the low end?
Low frequencies are effectively omnidirectional: a subwoofer radiates almost as much energy backwards as forwards, and that is what reaches the house next door once the melody is no longer distinguishable. Attack it in this order: first orientation — turn the stage so the back of the system faces the most sheltered side of the plot; then a cardioid subwoofer configuration, which achieves in the order of 12 to 15 dB less energy to the rear; then distribution across several low-level points instead of one very loud point; and only last, the limiter. On top of that, in the small hours the thermal inversion refracts sound back towards the ground and carries it much further than at ten in the evening: the same level is more disturbing at two.
What happens if it rains at an outdoor event?
Plan B is decided at the site visit, not on the day. What we always ask for is an identified covered alternative, with its own power and reachable without dismantling half the system, plus a deadline for making the call. Rain is rare in a Mallorcan summer, but pre-dawn dew is not: it condenses on decks, screens and connectors and has taken more gear out of service than storms have. That is why any outdoor control position — booth, desk, FOH — gets a roof even when the forecast is clear, and amplifiers and distribution boards never sit directly on the ground.
